What is the CEFR?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for grading
an individual’s proficiency in a foreign language. The CEFR breaks down proficiency into six levels,
from A1 (Beginner) to C2 (Proficient), and evaluates skills in reading, writing,
listening, and speaking.
The levels are grouped into three categories:
A1 - A2: Basic User
B1 - B2: Independent User
C1 - C2: Proficient User
Global CEFR Scales
Basic User - A
A2
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g., basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of their background, environment, and immediate needs.
A1

Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects, explaining viewpoints on topical issues and weighing the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
B1
Can understand the main points of clear, standard input on familiar matters like work, school, or leisure. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in areas where the language is spoken. Can produce simple, connected text on familiar or personal topics and describe experiences, events, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
Proficient User - C
C2
Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and presenting them coherently. Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, even in complex situations.
C1
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning. Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious effort. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns and cohesive devices.
